Hiring a Tampa, FL Mover Without Encountering Hidden Fees
Moving is stressful enough, so you don’t want to have the added worry about hiring a Tampa, FL mover that tacks on hidden fees. As a savvy consumer, however, you can prevent sticker shock when it comes time to pay your moving company. Below, our Central Florida movers share their best tips for securing affordable moving services.
Request an in-home estimate before you commit.
When you have a million things on your moving to-do list, it can be tough to find time for an in-home estimate. However, it’s difficult for a mover to understand the full scope of your move without seeing your inventory in person. If they know up front how many rooms of furniture you have and whether or not there will be any special assembly/disassembly requirements, your mover will be able to give you a more accurate quote up front. They’ll also be able to tell you ahead of time which – if any – of your items will require a special handling fee. (This is common for pieces like pianos, pool tables, and large wall cabinets.)
Decide whether hourly billing or flat-fee billing makes more sense.
Tampa movers typically bill in one of two ways: hourly, or flat rate. If you only need assistance with a few heavy pieces of furniture, an hourly mover may be the way to go. If it’s a more extensive job (or you’re moving more than a few neighborhoods away), hiring a flat rate mover could save you money in the long run.
Inquire about extras.
When you’re not expecting them, extras can add up fast. If you don’t choose a mover who offers an all-inclusive price, make it a point to ask about insurance fees, packaging costs, equipment usage (i.e. dollies), gas surcharges, and similar extras. Side note: some movers try to inflate the overall cost with fees that should already be included, so be sure to inquire about those as well. For instance, if the truck is parked more than 75-100 feet from your door, the mover may tack on a long carry fee, or they may charge an extra stop fee to drop boxes off at a storage unit en route to your final destination.
